| Srikanth, Priya Win Titles |
G.Srikanth of Bharath Petroleum sweetened his comeback to competitive chess by winning the Chennai District Championship held on May 27th and 28th at the Indian
Red cross Society, Egmore. Srikanth was awarded Rs.1000/- and Shri. A.N.Parasuraman Memorial Rolling Trophy. In an era dominated by youngsters following on Vishy Anand's trail, it was no surprise to see more than three-fourths of the 96 participants being below 19 years of age. But then, for Srikanth
in spite of his lack of tournament practice in the past year, it was the passion to play that breezed him through the seven round swiss event.
Playing with flair and swiftness he scored 6.5 points which included wins over young R R Laxman and Ebenezer Joseph who had recently finished second at the Salem Open. S Laxman too coming after an
hibernation though a long one lasting a year and a half due to his board exams, took the second spot with a victory over Ebenezer in the final round from a
seemingly equal position. The seventeen year old (or young!) lad who also an IM norm under his belt is a definite hope of Chennai Chess. Two tiny tots who continued their with good run after the Children's Nationals at Ahmedabad were Bharath Raj Kidambi (PSBB School)who outfoxed D Ganesh in the last round to finish fourth and V Hari Balu ( Bobby Fischer Chess Academy) who took the creditable eight place.
The Women championship was dominated by P Priya (Avichi
School) who won the title with 5.5 points to her credit. In her seventh and final round
match, Priya defeated Aneeqha Tahseen (SKMHSS). H.Nilavoli (Presidency GHSS) took her tally to 5
points when she drew her final round game with R.Sushmitha (SKMHSS). P.N.Harini (SKMHSS) won her
match against Malarvizhi Hariharan to secure 5 points. On account of Tie Break Score, Nilavoli and Harini
finished second and third respectively. P.Malar Sdelvi finished fourth with 4.5 points to her
credit.
Mrs.Afroze Ahamed, mother of the newly crowned National girls Under-14 Champion, Nabeela, distributed the Prizes. Though the event played under the rapid
format (one hour for each player) was restricted to just two days for the want of good sponsorship turned out to be an exciting one or the players and onlookers alike, as every Chennai District Championship in the past decades
have turned out to be.
