Kanchi District State Selection Tournament

Natarajan triumphs

Top seeded C Natarajan (ICF) took a short draw from another FIDE rated player Navaneethakrishnan and won the Kanchi District title in the tournament conducted by Kanchi District Chess Association at Valluvar Gurukulam, here at Tambaram, Madras. Natarajan scored 5.0 points in six rounds and remained undefeated.  Both M Muthukumar (P&T) and K Mohan Kumar, the defending champion, tied for second spot with 4.5 points with equal progressive score of 16 each and the organizers had to apply tie break by draw of lots. In the draw, Muthukumar and Mohan Kumar were placed second and third spot respectively.

The tournament witnessed two upsets in the initial rounds. H Santhanam, last year runner-up, suffered at the hands of Vijayaraghavan and the veteran K Thirukalathy, Joint Secretary, TNCA defeated Navaneethakrishnan in the second round.  Youngster Raghuram Balaji made a big impression on Santhanam in the final round by thrashing him. In the women's section, Thavamani (St.Marks) made cent percent score of 4 points in four rounds and emerged as District champion. Anjaana N Sowjanya (Vivekananda), who lost to Thavamani in the final round, had to satisfy with the second place with 2.5 points.

The organizers, as token of encouragement, awarded a prize to Manuvaidyaramanan, the youngest participant of the tournament.  Top four players in the Men's section and top five players in the women's section are qualified to represent the Kanchi District in the forthcoming Tamil Nadu State Championship to be held at Karur in the first week of May 2001.
