Venkatesh Champion, youngsters to the fore

Day One

SPIC sponsored M R Venkatesh of Wesley High School, Chennai  lifted the Lakshmi General Finance Trophy, by securing 8.0 points out of a possible nine, in the 6th Annual Lakshmi General Finance Open Rapid Chess Championship organized by CAPA Chess Academy at Sree Alamelu Manga Kalyana Mandapam, Chennai.  In the final round game Venkatesh settled for a quick draw with R Preetham Sharma of Loyola College, Chennai. Venkatesh took home LGF Trophy plus a cash prize of Rs 2,500/- and it comes as a whiff of fresh air that the old warhorses were given a run for the money. For it was youngsters to the fore all the way and that the average age of the top ten finishers would be Under 23 bodes well for Indian chess.

In deed the title achievement of Venkatesh was a laudable one considering the strength of the tournament with three International Masters. He remained undefeated with 8.0 points  Preetham Sharma who beat Ram S.Krishnan (Loyola), his collegiate, in the penultimate round took the second place with 7.5 points and pocked Rs.1500/-. Giant killing performance of Ram S Krishnan in the do-or-die final round against IM V.Saravanan fetched him the third prize of Rs.800/-. Both C Natarajan (ICF) and A Shankar (Rlys), who beat IM Konguvel and IM Saravanan respectively yesterday, could not sustain their winning momentum. In all the tournament witnessed high quality chess in the quick version of the game. Even experienced players with the tags of International Masters were not spared. Mr Sam Sridharan, Manager - Operations, M/s Lakshmi General Finance Limited, gave away the Prizes.

Day One

Venkatesh leads, Gopalakrishnan holds Kidambi

Junior star M R Venkatesh of of Wesley High School, Chennai lead the strong pack with 5.0 points at the end of the 5th round in the sixth annual Lakshmi General Finance Open Rapid Chess Tournament organized by Capa Chess Academy at Sree Alamelu Manga Kalyana Mandapam, Chennai. The tournament attracted 124 entries with 23 FIDE Rated players including 3 International Masters – V Saravanan, Sundararajan Kidambi and Ponnuswamy Konguvel.

The tournament went without any fire works till third round.  But in fourth round C Natarajan (ICF) stopped the winning spree of former National Champion IM Konguvel with white pieces.  He not only managed to capture a pawn initially, but also a bishop and eventually a full point.  In the top two boards the top seed IM V Saravanan and IM Sundarajan Kidambi (playing after a long gap due his school final examinations) were held to a draw by Syed Anwar Sazhuli (ICF) and K Gopalakrishnan (Indian Bank) respectively.

But in the fifth round it was a hammer blow to IM Saravanan when he missed a simple win with two queens. Crestfallen Saravanan overlooked one move mate due severe time pressure and threw away a point to A Sankar (Southern Railway). At the end of the fifth round, three players – R Balasubramaniam (ICF), A Sankar (ICF) and Ram S Krishnan - with 4.5 points are following the leader and a group of 14 other players are in the third spot with 4.0 points apiece.
