The first Kumararaja Muthaiah State Level Inter-School chess championship for boys and girls organised by Chettinad Vidyashram was attracted in a big way with a record number of 944 entries from different part of Tamil Nadu. This was the second biggest participation in India next only to the one reportedly conducted at Salem few years back. The tournament was held during 26-27, January 2001 at Chettinad Vidyashram at Chennai.
The Championship was inaugurated by Mrs Meena Muthaiah, (affectionately called as 'Meena Aunty'), Secretary and Correspondent of the School. As the tournament attracted more number of entries the entire pairing was done through pairing software and but of which nine rounds in two days for ten categories (U-8,10,12,14,16 Boys/Girls) would not have been possible.
In girls section Sathya Priya (U-8), Anjanaa N Sowjanya (U-10), Raghavi (U-12), Priya (U-14), Malar Selvi (U-16) won the titles with cent percent score. In the boys section as expected there were stiff competition for the respective titles. Modern School, Chennai won the School Trophy and Shri Manual Aaron, Secretary, TNCA distributed prizes to the winners.
