Rahul Shetty takes Rapid title
The IM elect Rahul Shetty (Elo 2307) of Indian Airlines emerged unbeaten Champion in the Open Rapid Chess Tournament organised by the newly formed King Chess Club, Mumbai. The tournament was conducted by Bombay Chess Association at Gokuldham High School, Goregaon East, on July 2, 2000. 

The one-day inaugural event attracted a record number of 103 entries which included eleven rated players vying for a prize money of Rs.6250. Out of 21 prizes offered, 11 were allocated as encouragement prizes under various categories of Children who were 43 in number. 

Top seeded Rahul Shetty remained unbeaten with 7 pts out of possible 8 and took home the first cash prize of Rs.1200. Rahul Shetty won five rounds and drew two, one with 14 year old Yashodhan Gogte in the second round and the other with a rated player Pankaj Joshi (Elo 2279) in the ultimate round. Three players viz., Pankaj Joshi of Western Railway, Amardeep Bartekke (Elo 2212) of Western Railway and V.K.N. Solanki (Elo 2162) of MTNL - all scored 6.5 pts each. However they were placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively based on their progressive score.

Final results:

First Prize      : Rahul Shetty (Elo 2307) - 7 pts.
Second Prize : Pankaj Joshi (Elo 2279) - 6.5 pts.
Third Prize     : Amardeep Bartekke (Elo 2212) - 6.5 pts.

Encouragement prizes:
Best player in Under 8: Karan Ajinkya of Yashodham High School (4 pts)

Best player in Under 10:
First     : Abhishek Ravi (4 pts)
Second: Meghan Gupte (3.5 pts)

Best player in Under 12:
First: Aditya Vora of Don Bosco High School (5 pts)
Second: Ishaan Nadkarni of Fr. Agnel High.School (5 pts).

Best player in Under 14:
First     : Yashodhan Gogte of Bombay Scottish School (5.5 pts)
Second: Gaurav Hingne of Fr. Agnel High School, Vashi (5 pts)

Best player in Under 16: V. Karthik of Jamnabai High School (6 pts)

Best Girl player :
First     - Ketaki Kulkarni of Patkar Vidyalaya, Dombivli (4.5 pts.) (P.S. 22.5)
Second - Mugdha Variyar of Gokuldham High School (4.5 pts.) (P.S. 17)

Special prize to the youngest player : Miss Raghini Joshi (4 ½ years old, scored one point) of Yashodham High School. 

Sri Rajas Ajinkya, a Chess lover from the Gokuldham Area presided over the Prize distribution ceremony and gave away the prizes. Sri P. B. Bhilare and Sri Dhananjay carried out the Arbiter jobs excellently."
