| T.V. Karthikeyan of Loyola
College won the Chennai District Rapid Championship by securing 7 points out of eight
rounds. He was awarded a Cash Prize of Rs 1,000/-. The two-day event was held at the
Indian Red Cross Society The first five rounds were
held on the first day and Karthikeyan won them all to move into the lead. In the fifth
round he toppled the top seed K Visweswaran. In the eighth and final round Karthikeyan
settled for a quick draw with G Srikanth (BPCL). The second table game between C.J. Arvind
(Loyola) and former National "B" Champion R. Balasubramanian (ICF) ended in a
quick draw.
Ram S.Krishnan (PSBB) had to fight every inch to secure a
draw against former Tamil Nadu State Champion P. Magesh Chandran. K. Visweswaran and FIDE
Master K.V. Shantharam (Indian Bank) scored fluent wins against their younger rivals R.
Naveen (DAV) and V. Haribalu respectively. S P Muthuraman was the only blind participant
in the championship. He played the games with the aid of a special Braille Chess Board.
His enthusiasm and seamless effort to compete was admirable. He was awarded a Special
Prize for his effort. In all, 72 players took part in the competition. The top two players
will represent Chennai district in the Tamil Nadu State Rapid Chess Championship which is
to be held in the City shortly.

gave away the prizes on Sunday evening. |
