Muthu Alagappan (Sethu
Bhaskara School) and C.H. Savetha (Diamond Rays School, Salem) won the titles in the
Under-8 category of the Capa Chess Academy's III Annual National Selection Chess
Championships held at the Indian Red Cross Society yesterday.Muthu Alagappan secured 5.5 points out of a possible six. G. Jai
Ganesh (Vivekanand Vidyalaya) finished second with 5 points.
C.H. Savetha secured 5 points to clinch the title in the
Under-8 Girls category. Savetha defeated Raishika in the sixth and final round. G.
Amrithavalli (J.V. Vidyalaya) finished runner-up with 4 points.
In the Under-10 Boys' section, T. N. State Under-8
Champion S. Nitin (Sri Sarada Bala Mandir, Salem) emerged as champion. Nitin, K. Narayanan
(MAM Hr. School, Kottaiyur) tied with each other with 5 points. As their tie break scores
were also equal, the 'spin of coin' method was adopted and Nitin was lucky to emerge
as champion. Narayanan bagged the second prize and R. Ashwath (SBOA) with 5 points got the
third prize, on account of his low tie-break score.
I n Under-10 Girls' section, Sowjanyaa (SRDFVV School)
and L. Sudharshana (Cluny School, Salem) tied with each other with 5 points out of the six
rounds. Sowjanyaa emerged as champion on account of better progressive score.
The winners of Under-8, 10,12, and 14 and winners and
runners-up of Under-19 become eligible to represent Capa Chess Academy in the forthcoming
Nationals.
In the Prize Distribution function held on Sunday
evening, Aarthie Ramaswamy, the new world Under-18 Champion, and Mr. Senthil Kumar, the
Secretary of the Salem District Chess Association gave away the prizes to the winners.
