Laxman, Raghavi win titles

Previous Day

R R Laxman of Anna Engg., won the Sri A N Parasuraman Memorial Rolling Trophy, by emerging as champion in Men's category of Chennai District Senior Chess Championship conducted by Chennai District Chess Association at Sree Alamelu Manga Kalyana Mandapam here today.

There was a three way tie amongst Laxman, Venkatesh of Wesley High School and R Siddarth of CSI Ewarts, as all of them secured 6.0 points each out of a possible seven. Better tie-break score enabled Laxman to win the title.

While Laxman defeated Ram S Krishnan of Loyola (5.0), Tamil Nadu State Champion M R Venkatesh won against erstwhile leader Ebenezer Joseph of P&T Audit (5.5). Siddarth overcame the stiff resistance put up by M Vinoth Kumar (5.0) Laxman was awarded sri A N Parasuraman Memorial Rolling Trophy plus Rs 1,000/-, cash prize.

In the Women's section, Raghavi of PSBB, and former National 'A' player S Sujatha tied with each other with 6.0 points at the end of the seventh and final round. While Raghavi won against her schoolmate K Mrunalini, Sujatha drew her game with P Malarselvi of St John's School. Better tie-break score enabled Raghavi to win the title.

The doctor couple, Dr N Rajaram, ENT Consultant, Malar Hospital and Dr M Roopmala, Gynacologist, G H, gave away the prizes.

Venkatesh, Laxman in lead

Reigning Tamil Nadu State Champion M R Venkatesh and former National Under 12 Champion R R Laxman lead the pack with four points each at the end of the fourth round in the Chennai District Senior Chess Championship for Sri A N Parasuraman Memorial Rolling Trophy being organised by Chennai District Chess Association at Sree Alamelu Manga Kalyana Mandapam, T Nagar here today. 

In all, 68 players (60 men and 8 women) are taking part in this seven round Swiss Championship. The top four finishers will be selected to represent Chennai District Chess Association in the forthcoming Tamil Nadu State Championship to be held at Karur from May 1, 2001. 

In the top board game, M R Venkatesh defeated Chennai District Rapid Champion Ram S Krishnan of Loyola College, while Laxman accounted for the talented youngster Siddarth.  Defending Champion G Srikanth of BPCL is in the second place half a point behind at 3.5 points along with M J Noohu and Ebenezer Joseph (P&T). 

In the women's section, former National "A" player S Sujatha and N Raghavi are in joint lead with 3.5 points each at the end of the fourth round in an eight player all-play-all league. They drew their individual encounter in the fourth round and remain in contention for the qualifying slot.
