S Susil Kumar (United India Insurance) emerged victor in the AdClub-OPEL Rapid Chess Championship conducted by Advertising Club Madras at Chief PMG & Chief GMT Recreation Club, Chennai on Feb 25th, 2001. Every year the Club conducts tournament in sports field like Chess, Carrom, Table Tennis, and Cricket for its members. United India Sports Recreation Club (UISRC) had to rejoice twice as their two players - Susil Kumar and Anitha Manavalan - took both the Winner and Runner trophies. Anitha Manavalan, who lost to Susil Kumar, had to satisfy with Runner's trophy when both the compatriots pitted against each other with three points each in the final round. In the complicated middle game of the Queen Gambit Decline opening Anitha messed up thing and lost her centre pawn. She missed to capitalise the back rank weakness of the victor. Subsequent weak moves of Anita sealed her fate and Susil Kumar won the game easily. Earlier S Arun Kumar (Sudhan Software Solutions), defending champion, lost to Madhava Reddy (Corporate Media) in the second round and was out of the race. Srinivasan (Times of India) who also lost to the winner took the third spot with three points.
Mr George Daniel, Chief Arbiter and Mr Samson Anna Rao, Dy Arbiter ably conducted the tournament. Shri Narendranath, Chief Manager (Sales), ACT India gave away the trophies in the absence of the Chief Guest Shri Vijay Xaviour, President, AdClub, Chennai, to the respective winner and runner.
