K V Shantharam (Indian Bank) was defeated at the hand of his compatriot IM N.Sudhakar Babu in the 6th and the final round to enable the latter to take title in the 11th Inter-Bank (Southern Region) Chess Tournament 2001-2002 being concluded at Indian Red Cross Society here today.
IM Sudhakar Babu scored 5.0 points and remained undefeated. Shantharam took the second spot with 4.5 points. Indeed it was great show by the players of Indian as all its six players took the first six places in the individual event. For Indian Bank, it was a foregone conclusion as far as the team tally was concerned. They scored 18.5 points far ahead of others. There were contest only for the third to fifth position between Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank and Bank of Baroda, whereas RBI took the second spot with 15 points.
Later in the evening Shri J.C.D.Prabhakaran, Vice-President, Tamil Nadu Chess Association gave away the prizes to the winners. Shri D.V.Sundar, Vice-President, AICF also spoke on the occasion. Individual
