10th Inter-Bank Southern Region Chess Championship

Indian bank retains title
Sudhakar Babu takes the individual honour

It was a foregone conclusion when the full contingent of Indian Bank with six FIDE rated players including two International Masters took part in the 10th Inter-Bank Southern Bank Chess Championship organised by Canara Bank under the auspices of Bank Sports Board at the Indian Red Cross Society, Chennai. They lived up to the expectation by taking both the Team and Individual titles. They retained the team title for a record time of 10 years.

Indeed there was no match for Indian Bank comprising GM norm holder IM G.B.Prakash, IM Sudhakar Babu, V.Hariharan, K.Gopalakrishnan and Saimeera Ravi and they swept the baskets of points in the initial rounds. When they were paired against each other in the later rounds they made short draws and took the title with authority. But the interesting part was the neck-to-neck race between RBI, IOB and Canara Bank for the Second, Third and Fourth place and they finished the event in that order.

In the individual tally, both IM Sudhakar Babu and Saimeera Ravi tied at 5 points in six rounds and with the better progressive score the former took the title. K.Muralimohan UCO bank, the only rated player from the bank, posed a spirited challenge to IM Sudhakar Babu in the fourth round. But the experience of the International Master prevailed in the end.

Shri Manual Aaron, Secretary, TNCA and Shri Fernandes, Dy. General Manager distributed the prizes to the winners. Earlier, the new Indian Grand Master K.Sasikiran was felicitated by Canara Bank and he played simultaneously against 30 players and defeated all of them with authority. The youngsters R.Vasanth and V. Nilavoli could only put up a good fight but the mighty Sasikiran was unstoppable.
