3rd Saturday GM tournament, Belgrade, Yugoslavia

Round 11  Humpy takes her second straight title

Junior World Champion Koneru Humpy collected her 2nd successive title in just about a month, winning the 3rd Saturday GM tournament at Belgrade here today. Humpy split the point with Todorov Ognjan of Bulgaria in the final round and the table with 8.5 points. The fourteen-year-old, who won the second GM norm in the 9th round, was tied at 8.5 points with Stojenovic Mihagilo of Yugoslavia but since Humpy defeated him in the fifth round the title went her way.

Humpy, who became the first Indian Woman Grand Master to have two GM norms, played king’s Indian attack and settled for a draw in eleven moves. She also has the 11 round GM norm for having 8.5 points for the category seven GM tournament, which was the result of six wins and five draws.

Commenting on her victory, Humpy said, "This third Saturday tournament is more gratifying for me as I won the second GM norm and also I did not loose a single game". The ninth-standard Andhra Pradesh girl had earlier won the first Saturday GM Chess Tournament held at Budapest with a tally of 7.5 points from one loss, five wins and five draws.
