The rising Indian star K Visweswaran
finished second in the Maryland Open, USA with a 4/5 score. His
tremendous conquest included a big win over Grandmaster Igor Novikov of Ukraine.
Grandmaster Novikov who'd won the Foxwoods Open just
a week prior this tourney was completed outplayed by the young
crusader from Madras. GM Igor Novikov with a FIDE Rating of 2596
is ranked 98th in the world.
Visweswaran who has been in the US circuit for almost 100 days now,
found the right moves to deliver the killing blow on the Ukraine
Grandmaster. The win was a great inspiration to other Indian
youngsters who were playing the event. Visweswaran had a flying start
scoring 3/3 in the weekend five round Swiss, that went on from April 20-22, 2001.
But he lost to penultimate round to Kristenov Stanislav with black and beat IM Lary Kaufman in the fifth
and final round, to make the cut.
The Indian's play was
full of confidence and he executed his moves with telling effect and
perfection. This result should go a deal in boosting his morale to do
well in other tourneys in the circuit.
