Kasparov beats Anand, takes Iceland Rapid title

Games

GM Gary Kasparov of Russia won the Chess@Iceland Rapid Chess tourney defeating World No.2 GM Viswanathan Anand of India in a blitz tie-break at Kopavogur, Iceland on Sunday, April 2, 2000. Holding Kasparov 1-1 in the rapids, Anand lost the first of the blitz games on time in a drawish position. Going all out for the kill the Indian lost the second blitz game in 29 moves despite throwing a knight sacrifice.

Kasparov took home $ 4500 while Anand settled for runner-up prize $ 3500. Six cash prizes totalling $ 14500 and a latest Ericsson mobile phone were given to the prize winners. The biggest top draw tournament in Iceland in the past decade was played in the new Music Conservatorium in Kopavogur, a suburb of Reykjavik, Iceland. The rapid tournament was co-sponsored by www.oz.com/chess , www.islandssimi.is , www.ericsson.com  and www.chessclub.com

Earlier, after two exciting rapid games, Anand and Kasparov were tied 1-1. In game one, Kasparov was impressive with the black pieces but Anand pulled up to draw the game in 41 moves. Anand had a bishop and pawn against Kasparov's rook. In game two, Anand played the French defence as black and equalised after move 20. Kasparov had to force a repetition of moves to draw the game after 28 moves.
