Final Round Humpy wins the title

Junior World Champion Koneru Humpy added one more feather to her cap winning the First Saturday GM tournament at Budapest here today. Humpy drew her last round match against GM Todorovic Goran and logged in 7.5 points. With the draws in the last two rounds, Humpy narrowly missed her second men GM Norm. However she has improved her Elo rating considerably. IM Horvath Peter and IM Jakab Attila finished joint second. The Bank of Baroda sponsored girl is scheduled to play at Belgrade, Yugoslavia to participate in Third Saturday Chess tournament starting from 20th October, 2001.

Round 10 Humpy misses out on GM Norm

Woman Grandmaster Koneru Humpy missed a chance of earning her second men's Grandmaster Norm when she had to settle for a draw against IM Jakab Attila of Hungary in the tenth and penultimate round at Budapest here today. Humpy needed to win her last two rounds to reach 8.5 points and earn her second men's GM Norm. However, after a pitched battle in a Nimzo Indian defense which later transformed into a Caro Kann defense, Humpy, playing black, had to be content with a draw after 47 moves. With five wins, four draws and one defeat in the ten rounds, Humpy now has 7.0 points. She will play GM Goran Todorovic of Yugoslavia in the last round for the title.

Round 9 Humpy shares lead with Horvath

Koneru Humpy held on to her overnight lead despite being held to a draw in the ninth round at Budapest, here today. The World Junior Champion drew her ninth round match against IM Fogarasi Tibor from Hungary and now shares the top spot with IM Peter Horvath, who also has 6.5 points from nine games.

Playing with black, Humpy drew the game in 28 moves. She now has to win her remaining two games to obtain her second Grandmaster's Norm. Horvath was among the notable winners in the ninth round. Playing white, he beat Goran Kosanovic (4) of Yugoslavia to stay in the hunt for the title. 

Satea Husari (5) of Syria also stayed in with a chance of emerging among the top three by beating (5) Liuben Spassov (2.5) of Bulgaria. Humpy next faces IM Jakab Attila (5.5) of Hungary in 10th round and GM Goran Todorovic (4.5) of Yugoslavia in last round of the tournament.

Round 8 Humpy leads

Continuing her winning spree, WGM Koneru Humpy trounced Al-Sayed Mahamad of Qatar and emerged as the sole leader with 6.0 points after the eighth round at Budapest here today. Playing White, Humpy unleashed her aggressive play to defeat Mahamad in 48 moves. Humpy, with six points, is 2.5 points away with three games to go to achieve her second norm for men's GM title. She is closely followed by IM Horvath Peter and IM Jakab Attila (both Hungary) with 5.5 points each.

Round 7 Humpy beats Horvath, shares lead

WGM Koneru Humpy defeated leader IM Peter Horvath in the seventh round to share the lead with Horvath and Attila with 5.0 points at Budapest here today. Humpy employed Nimzo Indian defense with Black and sewed up the game 47 moves. With this emphatic win over the tournament leader, Humpy moves towards her much cherished dream of becoming a Grandmaster in the men's section. Humpy has a tough task on hand as she need 3.5 points from the next four rounds, with a mixed opposition coming up for her.

Round 6 Humpy loses to Hoang, Horvath leads

In an exciting battle between two Junior World Champions, WGM Koneru Humpy lost her sixth round game against WGM Hoang Thanh Trang of Vietnam. The defeat pushes the talented Andhra girl to third position with 4.0 points behind IM Peter Horvath Peter (5.0) and IM Jakab Attila (4.5). Humpy faces the leader IM Peter Horvath in the next round with black pieces.

Round 5 Humpy shares lead with Peter Horvath

WGM Koneru Humpy of India playing with black pieces drew GM Spassov Liuben of Bulgaria but maintained her lead jointly with IM Peter Horvath of Hungary after the fifth round at Budapest here today. Humpy and Horvath lead the table with 4.0 points.

In an interesting clash for the sixth round, Humpy who is the current World Junior Champion plays with white against Hoang Thanh Trang of Vietnam who is a former World Junior Champion. Hoang, who played in India recently at the World Championship Qualifier at Calcutta, is a tough nut to crack and will test the talented Indian to the hilt.

Following Humpy and Horvath half a point behind is Jakab Attila of Hungary with 3.5 points. Earlier, IM Horvath Peter of Hungary defeated Al Syed Mohammad of Qatar to join Humpy in the lead.

Round 4 Humpy beats Biro Sandor, in sole lead

In the fourth round, playing white, Humpy beat IM Biro Sandor of Hungary, and in sole lead with 3.5 points. Horvath Peter and Fogarasi Tiber both from Hungary share the second place with 3.0 points each. In the fifth round Humpy will face GM Spassov Liuben from Bulgaria who is having 0.5 points from four rounds.

Round 3 Humpy is in clear second spot

After the third round of the First Saturday GM Tournament, Koneru Humpy took her points tally to 2.5/3 by defeating Husari Satea of Syria, playing white in the third round. She is now in second place behind the current leader Horvath Peter, IM from Hungary with 3.0 points.

Earlier in the second round she won the game against WGM Dembo Yelena of Hungary playing white. In the first round she started with black and drew with GM Kosanovic Goran of Yugoslavia. Humpy's fourth round opponent is Biro Sandor from Hungary who is now having 0.5 points from three rounds.

The First Saturday GM Tournament started on 06th October, 2001 and will end on 17th October, 2001. 12 Players from various countries like Hungary, Yugoslavia, Syria, Qatar, Vietnam, Bulgaria and India were participating in this tournament.
