First Saturday GM Tournament, Budapest
March 2nd to 16th, 2002

Round 8  Humpy drops out

Stung by a series of defeats, India's youngest woman Grandmaster Koneru Humpy dropped out of the First Saturday GM tournament being held at Budapest, Hungary. The only Indian girl to win the World Junior Women championship, the fourteen-year-old, who has achieved the first two men GM norms by virtue of her victories in the Lipa International tournament at Budapest and the Third Saturday GM tournament at Belgrade last year, needed 9.5 points from this tournament to clinch the third norm and the title.

But all hopes of the Bank of Baroda-sponsored girl, the only Indian girl to get the second GM norm, were shattered when she lost six games and split points in two others. The dejected girl, who has got only one point in the 13-round tournament, decided to quit midway through and return home, according to information received here.

Round 6 Humpy loses to IM Gergely

Woman Grandmaster Koneru Humpy (2539) lost to IM Antal Gergely of Hungary in the sixth round of the First Saturday Grandmasters' chess tournament in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday. After sharing points in the two previous rounds, the World junior champion suffered her fourth loss when she succumbed to the Hungarian player in 55 moves, in the 13-round category VII tournament.

The Bank of Baroda girl has only one point from six rounds and is at the bottom of the table, having drawn with IM Jakab Attila of Hungary (2406) and Kosanovic Goran of Yugoslavia (2428) after losing to IM B Algimantas of Lithuania (2449), IM Vajda Albert of Romania (2364) and IM Breder Dennis of Germany (2441) in the earlier rounds. At the end of the sixth round, Algimantas, Dennis and Viktor share the lead with four points each. They are closely followed by GM Lukacs Peter of Hungary (2444) and Vajda Albert, 3.5 points each.

Round 4 & 5 Humpy in drawn games

Koneru Humpy salvaged some pride by settling for a quick, 11-move draw against GM Goran Kosavanovic of Yugoslavia in a fourth round game and followed it up another draw against IM Jakab Attila (2406) of Hungary. With two draws from successive rounds, injecting some confidence, Humpy should bounce back in the next few rounds.

Round 3 Humpy loses again

The bid of Women Grandmaster Koneru Humpy (2539) to become the youngest woman to win the Men Grandmaster title, suffered a severe jolt as the teenager lost her third successive game in the first Saturday GM tournament at Budapest in Hungary on Wednesday. The World Junior Champion, who lost to Algimantas and Albert in the first two rounds respectively, went down to Breder Dennis of Germany (2411). Humpy, who had bounced back into contention many times in the past, has an unenviable task of scoring 9.5 points in the remaining 10 rounds.

International Master Butnorious Algimantas (2249) of Lithuania, International Master Breder Dennis and International Master Vajda Labert (2364) were joint leaders with 2.5 each at the end of the third round.
