| Sadvakasov champion at Bali, Sasikiran finishes 8th |
Games |
| Former World Junior Champion, GM Darmen Sadvakasov of Kazakhstan won the $20000 Japfa Open held at Bali, Indonesia between May 3 to 11, 2000 with 7.5 points in a four way tie with a better tie break. Sadvakasov has fond memories of India, for he won the Junior World Crown at Calicut, India in 1998. Tying Sadvakasov in the top with 7.5 points were GM Normunds Miezis of Latvia, IM Bong Villamayor of The Philippines and GM Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia.
National Champion and Grandmaster Elect Krishnan Sasikiran of India finished eighth in a field of 230. Sasikiran scored seven points out of nine rounds with six victories, two draws and his only loss was against the tournament winner, the Kazakh GM Sadvakasov. Another Indian in the fray, Dibyendu Barua finished 14th with 6.5 points. "I didn't too well in the middle. Overall it was a moderate performance," reflected Sasikiran on his showing after returning to his hometown Chennai from Bali. "Barua played well. He would have tied for first place, if he had not blundered in a winning position against Miezis in the final round," added
Sasikiran.
