Asian Universities Tournament, Singapore , May 17-22
The Madras University Chess team recorded its first ever overseas victory in the Global Youth TertiarMadras University team with trophiesy Institute's Chess Challenge in Singapore. Nine teams competed in this round robin event.The Madras University team qualified for the event by virtue of its performance in the All India Inter-Universities at BITS, Pilani, last year. The team consisted of G. Dinesh (Captain), T. V. Kathikeyan , G. Vinod, R. Aarthie, C. J. Arvind,   R. Navaneetha Krishnan and S. Pandurangan. The Physical Director, Madras University, accompanied  the team as  Manager while O. S. Shankar was the team's Coach.

               The winners, Madras University, won six of their eight matches and drew two. Besides the team trophy, T. V. Karthikeyan of Loyola College, Chennai, took the Gold for thMadras University Team in actione best individual performace, while R. Aarthie won the  " Best Women Player Award ". Karthikeyan played  all the matches and secured 7.5 points to tie with Foo Siang Ming of Singapore University. However, in the ensuing tie-break match of two games, Karthikeyan beat the player from Singapore, 1.5-0.5.The tournament which was excellently organised by, the host, Nanyang Technological University is to be conducted on a grander scale next time with invitations being sent to stong Chess Nations in the erstwhile Soviet Union.
