| Bronze for Indian men
and women at Asian Teams,Shenyang,China |
| In a stunning performance the
four member Indian team led by IM D V Prasad led the Asian Team Chess Championship at
Shenyang, China right till the final round when Uzbekistan led by super GM Alexander
Nenashev nosed them out by half a point to clinch the title. India was perilously close to
the title which would have taken them to the prestigious World Team Chess Championship
where all the continental winners participate. With Abhijit Kunte having an unclear
position, captain Prasad threw the gauntlet to winds and went all out for a win. A draw
for Prasad would have given the Asian Team title to India. But as things turned out,
Abhijit won, Prasad lost and India lost out on the tie breaks to Kazhakastan for the
Runner-up slot and finished third for a highly competent show. Indian women team led by International Women Master and National
Champion
S Vijayalakshmi put up an equal show finishing third. Like its counterparts the women team
also missed out on the tie-breaks for the second place to China 'B' and it augurs well for
Indian Chess that both the men and the women teams came up with a splendid show finishing
with the bronze each. Indian men had a flying start trouncing Tajikistan 3.5 - 0.5 in the
first round. Prasad drew, while the rest won their games comfortably. Indians continued
their good run in the second when they held the all Grand Master Kazakhastan team to a
draw. Abhijit beat GM Pavel Kostur in the second board, Sasi and Prasad drew with GMs
Vladimirov and Kazhagaleyev. GM Ruslan Irzhanov accounted for Prakash in the last board,
to level the scores 2 - 2.
The third round pitted the underdogs against topseed
China "A" and for once the Indians were found wanting. Prasad and Prakash drew
gaining the lone point, while Sasi and Abhijit suffered defeats against GMs Ye Jiang Chuan
and Zhang Zong in the top two boards. Indians bounced back in the very next round with a
sweeping 4 - 0 win against Singapore. Two rounds later Indians moved into lead with a big
win over Iran and held on to it until the final round. The tense final round saw Uzbeks
routing the lowly New Zealand 4 - 0 and moving to 23 points. India the sole overnight
leader with 20 points gathered 2.5 points against Indonesia, finishing with a final tally
of 22.5 points. Abhijit scored 6/9 while Sasi, Prasad and Prakash logged 5.5 points each.
It was a very worthy performance from the young Indian squad who had to do without a
reserve player throughout.
