Arghyadip Das Champion, Kid brigade rises

The West Bengal State Junior and Sub-Junior Boys Chess Tournament 2002 was held recently at Kolkata between April 17 to 24, 2002. The current National Sub-Junior Champion Somak Palit of Goodricke National Chess Academy finished second in the Juniors after losing to Arghadip Das also of GNCA who emerged the sole champ with 7.0 points out of 8 rounds.

Twelve year old Mary Ann Gomes vying for honors in the boys' category ended with 6.0 points in the meet and opted for the third place in the Junior category. The State Sub Junior title was bagged by Joydeep Dutta of Alekhine Chess Club with 6.5 points, while Debaditya Sinha Biswas and Debayan Majumdar finished half a point behind at 6.0 points each.

Debaditya ended up second while Debayan emerged third on better progressive score. Debayan presently aged thirteen created a sensation last year at The Telegraph Schools FIDE Rated Tourney when he beat one of the tournament favorites Rohan Shandilya and defeated last round sole leader Abhisek Das of Bihar in a thriller to clinch the third place in this prestigious tournament.

Presently Debayan at 13, Debaditya and Mary Ann both aged 12 are the most promising chess kids on the block here at Kolkata.
