K Gunasekaran of
Integral Coach Factory, Chennai won the
coveted Golden Jubilee Tamil Nadu FIDE rated chess championship after
the 11th round at the Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and
Technology, Pollachi, here today.
Gunesakaran, a regular in city tournaments for the past couple of
years, found his touch in the right time to hit the biggest prize of
his career. His prize was Rs.16,000 plus the V J Brahmiah Rolling
Trophy. Gunasekaran along with A Muthuswamy (Coimbatore), T.J.Suresh Kumar
(ICF, Chennai) and P Phoobalan (Coimbatore) qualify to represent Tamil Nadu in the forthcoming
National 'B' Chess Championship, scheduled to be held at Jullundar,
later this year.
Dr N Mahalingam,
President of Tamil Nadu Chess Association, presided over the closing
function, while Dr M Ibrahim Alladin of Canada was the Chief
Guest and gave
away the prizes. Mr D V Sundar, Vice-President, All India Chess
Federation, Mr. Rm N Karuppiah, President of Sivagangai District
Chess Association, Mr G Irulappan (Mannargudi), Prof C Ramaswamy,
Secretary of Dr Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology
paid tributes to those who made the championship a major success.
