Maa TV All India FIDE-Rating Open, Vijayawada

Round 12 Ramakrishna emerges Champion

Former Global Trust Champion J Ramakrishna of Guntur won the Maa TV All India FIDE-Rating chess tournament, for the Ippili Ashok Kumar memorial Trophy, at the Andhra Gymkhana, Vijayawada, here today. Ramakrishna edged Nikhilesh Kumar, with a better tie break score, for the title. Both logged in 9.0 points ahead of M Srinivasa Rao, G Rohit and J Venkataramana who finished with 8.0 points.

Round 9 Ramakrishna shares lead with Nikilesh Kumar

Andhra's K Nikilesh Kumar (2136) trounced overnight joint leader M Srinivasa Rao (2203) to join Global Trust Bank (GTB) champion J Ramakrishna (2193) in the lead with seven points each at the end of the ninth round in the Maa TV all India FIDE-rating Open Chess Tournament for Ippli Ashok Kumar Memorial trophy here today. Top-seed G Rohit (Hero Honda) and Andhra Champion Srinivasa Rao were closely following the leaders with 6.5 points ecah.

Round 7 Sai Srinivas stuns Ramana

In a major upset, Under-9 National champion D Sai Srinivas inflicted humiliating defeat on Chennai's J V Ramana (ELO rating 2199) even as overnight sole leader Srinivasa Rao (2203) of Andhra shared the lead with Global Trust Bank (GTB) champion J Rama Krishna at the end of the seventh round in the Maa TV All India FIDE-rating open chess tournament for Ippili Ashok Kumar memorial trophy here today. 

Upcoming star Sai Srinivas, who scored a 80-move win over the former GTB champion from Tamil Nadu, was in the second position with five points along with Andhra's K Nikilesh Kumar (2136). Top-seed G Rohit (2209) of Hero Honda, Andhra Bank's K N Gopal (2174), K Vedadri (2119) and T Keerti Rana (2086), both from Andhra, were in the third position with 4.5 points each.

While local lad Sai Srinivas, NSM Public School, opted for a king-pawn opening, Ramana, ICF, Chennai, countered it with Sicilian defence. Both played book moves in the opening and thereafter, Sai Srinivas got Queen-side pawn majority. In the end game, with king-side majority and in an equal position the Tamil Nadu player pressed for a win. In the process, Ramana lost a piece to Sai Srinivas in the 70th move and the latter won the game 10 more moves later.

On the top board, the overnight leader, who did not want to take any risk drew the peace treaty after 12 moves with Gopal to stay in the leading position. On the second board, Rama Krishna scored a facile 45-move victory over Railways' Ch Keshavananda Krishna (2175) in Sicilian irregular line game. On the third board, Nikilesh Kumar defeated his state-mate S K Khasim in French defence in 21 moves.
