Deshmukh wins Global Network title

Anup Deshmukh of Life Insurance Corporation of India, Nagpur, won the Global Networks Ranking Chess Tournament which concluded here on Wednesday. He won with an aggregate of 10.5 points out of a maximum of 13 and received a cash prize of Rs 7,000. Nasir Wajih came second with 10 points while Akshay Kumar Jain finished third with 9.5 points. Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, gave the awards away at a function at which other up-coming chess players were felicitated.

Deshmukh, who garnered 50 ELO points by virtue of his win here, said later that competition in North India is not as tough as it is in the West and South. "The players here play for enjoyment and, thus, very often let go of winning positions. The game is much more professional in Maharashtra," he said. A veteran of the 1998 Chess Olympiad, the IM wants to regain his place in the Indian team for the Olympics. In his spare time, Deshmukh trains budding youngsters at the sub-junior level in the intricacies of the game.

Sriram Jha, who has become the first International Master (IM) from Delhi, and Tanya Sachdev, who has won five medals at international chess tournaments were also honored. Bharat Singh Chauhan, Secretary of the Delhi Chess Association, which organized the event, announced that the National Junior Girls Chess Championship will also be held in the capital later this year. Taking the prizes behind Anup and Nassir were Akshay Kumar Jain, Gurpreet Pal Singh (Railways) and Vishal Sareen (LIC). Akshay logged in 9.5 points, while Gurpreet and Vishal finished with 9.0 points with the Gurpreet edging Vishal with a higher tie break score for the fourth place.
