Tournaments 2002 10th IBA Banks'
Sports Board All India
Inter-Bank, Grandmaster Elect G B Prakash of Indian Bank took the individual title
with a better tie break in the 10th All India Inter Bank Chess tournament
at Andheri Sports Complex, Bombay here today. In the seventh and final
round Prakash took a quick draw against IM Ravi Hegde of Union Bank of
India, logging 6.0 points. Topseed Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay joined
Prakash, with a hard fought victory over IM Sudhakar Babu of Indian Bank. But a better progressive score gave Prakash the individual title.
Earlier, in a crucial title battle Prakash had scored a 40 move
victory over Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay. The fifth round game rose
from Caro Kann and grew into an absorbing contest, before Prakash's
resilience and time got the better of Thipsay. In the team standings, it was Indian Bank again as they edged out
hosts Union Bank of India in the final round claiming the team title. It was the last three boards that did the trick for Indian Bank, as
Saimeera, Shantharam and Hariharan won their games taking their team's
final tally to 21.0 points. Despite the wins of Thipsay and Tilak, Union Bank of India could manage only 21.0 points and took the second
spot with a low tie break score. The final round defeat in the hands
of Pravin Thipsay, saw IM Sudhakar Babu of Indian Bank finishing
outside the prize list. The tournament was conducted by International
Arbiter Pulekar and his team. Final Placings
